MEET John

Meet John John Sheffield is known as the "Birthday King" at Beckman Adult Center. Every morning he announces birthdays over the intercom, wearing a special birthday hat. He's been known to sing "Happy Birthday" on occasion as well.

Before coming to Beckman, John worked at a restaurant downtown. He retired from there and a few years later came to work at Beckman for extra money. "It pays my cable bill!" John said.

As president of Beckman's employee council, John and other council members plan picnics and outings for the employees.

"John is willing to help with anything," said Karen Dobson, Activity Director at Beckman, "I really appreciate him."

Recently, John discovered a talent for playing the clavinova at music lessons taught by Karen and Peg Genis, Activity Director at Franks Adult Center. He played piano for a short time when he was younger. He even plays a few songs by ear.

His musical talent doesn't end there. For many years, he was in church choir, until navigating stairs became difficult. He hasn't given up singing altogether, though. He's considering performing a gospel song for the Beckman Talent Show in June.
